Few ballets radiate such warmth, charm and sheer joy as La Fille mal gardée. Frederick Ashton’s delightful choreography, with its rustic humor, sparkling technique and heartfelt romance, has been enchanting audiences for decades. This Royal Ballet revival promises to be no exception: every performance feels like a festival, and no one leaves the theatre without a smile.
The opening day, 18 October 2025, will be truly special — a full celebration of dance from morning to night. At the matinée, the divine Anna Rose O’Sullivan joins William Bracewell in a partnership as fresh as springtime itself. This is a role that fits her like a glove, light and radiant, as if Ashton created Lise just for her. Then, in the evening, the legendary duo Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov — one of ballet’s most beloved partnerships — will take the stage. A single day with two casts of this calibre is reason enough to cancel every other plan in London and spend the entire day inside the Royal Opera House.

On 22 October, Fumi Kaneko and Matthew Ball, so unforgettable together in The Sleeping Beauty, will dance these roles for the first time as a pair — a discovery not to be missed.

Francesca Hayward and Marcelino Sambé, both dazzling artists with irresistible charisma, will appear several times, including the filmed performance on 29 October and again on 5 and 11 November. I still remember Hayward as my very first live Aurora; seeing her now as Lise alongside Sambé will be nothing short of a dream.

On 13 November, Akane Takada and Calvin Richardson take the spotlight, bringing elegance and brilliance to these pastoral scenes.
And of course, under the baton of Jonathan Lo and José Salazar, the orchestra will give the score all its rustic sparkle and infectious energy.
From October 2025 through June 2026, La Fille mal gardée will brighten London with its playful wit, beautiful pas de deux and that famous clog dance — pure sunshine on stage.
